In Defence Of Eve

Edlyn Ang

Because paradise means contentment. Which is
not necessarily happiness.
Because her compliance was assumed.
Made from his rib for his loneliness;
made to be protected but no one asked
the pertinent question: Who protected her
from him.
Because she had grown
tired of the weak sounds of her own praying voice;
so chose to be villain rather than victim.
Because her fatal error lay not in consumption but
the refutation of paradise in desperate hunger
for myths running deep in sensate blood.
Because her history was written by men who never gave
her a voice but a word, "Yes".
Because Adam with his male complacence could never have seen
that snakes bring not the idea of sin
but possibility.
