The Wish To Be Alone

Alfred Siew

overgrown over the years,
these roadside trees frown jealously

the leaves open up at 3pm
to flick your thoughts on the windscreen

you can’t close your eyes
to the traffic
but you can’t blink fast enough.

though it’s a straight road
with no exits
and no u-turns

it’s hard to cut the engine
say stop, no, I don’t agree to the noise
and all the things I cannot wish away
by driving off

to apologise for thinking for myself
for running past the lights,

and above all, for
the wish to be alone.
